Connecting ELOs, Schools & Communities

  • New research from Dr. Deborah Lowe Vandell and her colleagues at the University of California-Irvine School of Education demonstrates that consistent participation in afterschool activities during the elementary school years is linked to narrowing the gap in math achievement by grade 5.

  • The Wallace Foundation provides research and resources related to how the after-school and summer work of schools, nonprofits, parks and other organizations can be coordinated to create better, more accessible programming community wide.

  • National League of Cities is focusing on building community-wide systems to support after school and summer programming. Their website provides resources, training and frameworks/guides for setting up systems building in your community.

  • Building Citywide Systems for Quality is a how-to guide designed to support the development of quality improvement systems in ELO settings. The guide can help those working to create better, more coordinated afterschool programming start building quality and develop existing efforts.

  • In 2011, Beyond School Bells was awarded a grant, termed Project Liftoff, from the Noyce Foundation to support high-quality Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) content into Nebraska’s out-of-school time programs.

  • Science and technology underpin nearly every aspect of today’s society, making STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills necessary for all students, regardless of whether they pursue careers in directly related fields.

  • The National Center for Community Schools provides resources, trainings, advocacy and helps develop comprehensive community schools and enhance existing school-community partnerships that promote academic achievement, youth development, and family and community well-being.

  • The Coalition for Community Schools advances opportunities for the success of children, families, and communities by promoting the development of more, and more effective, community schools. Check here for resources, evaluation tools, policy/advocacy information and facts on community schools.
